What you'll need:
- Earphones
- Embroidery floss
- Tape
- A good movie (because you're gonna be sitting for a while!)
- Clear glue (Not pictured. I used E6000)
- Scissors (Not pictured)
All you need to know is how to make a Chinese staircase knot. There are good instructions here but I'll also show you how to do it in this tutorial too.
Tape down the end of your earphones
Make a simple knot where the cord starts
Pull tightly
Hold the tail of the string
Cross the working end of the string over the cord AND the tail
Pull the working end under the cord then under the loop you made
Pull tightly. Repeat until you get the desired length for this color
Cut your string
Tie a simple knot around the cord AND tail of previous string
Make sure you hold the tails down as you continue knotting
Here are my earphones so far. Pretty cool huh? Experiment with the lengths of each color for a more interesting look
When you reach a stopping point (like where the earphones split or the mic), just cut your string, leaving a tiny bit. Put a dab of glue on the cord
Wrap the bit of string around the cord, smoothing it onto the glue
Sidenote: I forgot about this little sliding part (GRRR!), I meant to slide it all the way down. But I was not going to undo that string so I kind of skipped over it. Also, you may notice your cord getting wavy. To combat that, don't pull your cord or string too tightly. It won't hurt your earphones though, I promise
After the cord splits, just wrap each cord individually
DONE! Enjoy the compliments that you are sure to receive!
